The parish welcomed Father Albert McGettrick, C.Ss.R., the weekend of September 14 & 15, to celebrate mass, preach and speak to us about his missionary work in the northeast of Brazil. Through the diocese’s Missionary Cooperative Program, mission appeals are organized for parishes, and our guest this year was from the Redemptorist Vice-Province of Fortaleza, Brazil.
Fr. McGettrick shared with us his work which included support to Brazilian seminarians, education and training programs for some of Brazil’s poorest as well as nutritional and other supports to expectant mothers and children. Speaking to the last of these mission programs, Fr. McGettrick spoke on the creative solution of processing banana skins into a nutritional supplement, a powder to be added to children’s meals.
Originally from Dublin, he has spent more than four decades in Brazil at 13 different mission postings. His latest is in the Brazilian state of Maranhao where he works with three Brazilian Redemptorists.
Offering a donation for Fr. McGettrick’s good work is simple: make your cheque out to St. Augustine Parish, and in the memo line write “Brazil Mission.” We will consolidate all the donations and forward them to the diocese who will then ensure that the funds reach the Redemptorists community in Maranhao.
